The Roman Road towards a Multiethnic Church

I had the privilege to sit in a luncheon at the recent CATALYST WEST conference this past week.  The luncheon opened the conversation on the multiethnic evolution in churches, lead off by Dr. Mark DeYmaz of Mosaix network.

Here is the recap of some interesting points:

John 17 – JC envisions a multi ethnic church.

Acts 1 – God said go, Jerusalem was the only homogeneity church.

Acts 11 (KEY SECTION)- Persecution caused Christians to flee. Still some only wanted to talk to Jews. However, others went out and spoke to Greeks.  God had favor on them.

19 Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that broke out when Stephen was killed traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, spreading the word only among Jews. 20 Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. 21 The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.

A gentile church, Antioch, sets the pattern of church leadership as multiethnic.  In Acts 13, Luke cites the leaders and their origins.  Antioch happens to be the first missionary church.

Finally, the church of Rome gives us a Roman Road towards Multiethnic Faith:

Romans 1 addresses the Gentiles who were leading the church: “they/them” = 22x – I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. v1:14

Romans 2 addresses the Jews who were coming back into the church after banishment: “you” = 49x – You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. v2:1

Therefore it makes sense  in Ephesians 3:8-10, “…preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. 10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known…”

Unity and Diversity are premium in the church.  It is the most Healthiest way the church should grow.
